Start Where You Are and With What You Have

My first online communication as an entrepreneur was through an email newsletter. There was no fancy template, just my basic email set up that went out to about 15 friends. I had no way of knowing who opened it unless they hit reply. I did this for quite a few months before a developer friend suggested I get a website and share my weekly tips that way. This was back in 2000 and back then, I didn’t have the resources or the access to get my own domain name.

I used a free web platform for quite a few years and eventually taught myself how to build websites so I could share what I was learning with anyone who came across my words. As more tools became available and social media became more than a thing I added them to my arsenal.

Recently, someone asked if I thought it would give a bad impression of their business if they used a free web platform to start with. My response: Facebook, LinkedIn, are free. We are more likely to shake our head in wonder that your business is not on these free platforms than look down at you because you’re not.

Technology is there to serve and it’s constant development is based on the principle that everyone should be able to access it to enhance their life in whatever way is needed.

It is easy to be paralyzed worrying about what other people think of you and whether your logo and colors are just right. You will not have everything perfect when you begin, no matter how hard you try. But the longer you wait to share your work, the more difficult it becomes and the louder the voices of the perceived expectations of others gets in your head.

Start with your free web account or social media page BUT do not stop there. Because the spaces are free, it means there will always be limitations or changes outside of your control. Strive to grow your platforms and the ways in which people can access your work. Do not let your lack of a space keep you from serving your gift to the world.
