9 Things My Facebook News Feed Teaches Me About Entrepreneurship

EntrepreneurThey are a hodgepodge of people from across the globe. Family and friends I’ve known since childhood and people who I connected with because of shared passions. Here are nine things I’ve learned from viewing the activities of entrepreneurs on my Facebook timeline

  1. They are not afraid to have fun. The best part of entrepreneurship is doing work that you can have fun with. Making money should not just be a labor of love but make you happy as well.
  2. They work more than the average and not afraid of late nights. I do try to get a good night’s sleep but inevitably there are times when I am up late and I am never alone. Someone is always online working on something, sharing a laugh and ready to chat even at three in the morning.
  3. They understand the power of collaboration. Especially for Caribbean people who’ve had a habit of working in isolation, social media and the internet as a whole, is enabling us to reach out and connect with people who can help us expand our dream. Being able to see someone’s portfolio or send a quick message for feedback is priceless. Remember collaboration and freeloading are two different things.
  4. They are always learning and investing in their personal growth. Whether it is taking time off to enjoy a music festival, seeing a new part of the world or going back to school, entrepreneurs understand that they’ve got to spend and invest in their own growth in order for their business to grow. This also includes adopting healthier habits, eating right, and exercising.
  5. They are exploring new media and adding more into the mix. I find out more about new technology and where I should be looking for new ideas from what other entrepreneurs are sharing. They are willing to try new ways of promoting themselves to accomplish their goal of growing the business.
  6. They celebrate the successes of others as well as their own. Taking the time to say thank you to your graphic artist, promoting a new singer from your old high school or shouting out someone you’ve never met but admire is part of the life of an entrepreneur. Confident people don’t mind celebrating others consistently.
  7. They get creative. Have problem will innovate is the mantra of the entrepreneurs I know online. It doesn’t matter that they’ve done it before, the only thing that matters is getting the job done. When all else fails call mom.
  8. People doubting their idea or vision propels them even further. Tell them no please. They love it when you do, as it becomes the catalyst to prove others wrong. It helps build tenacity and allows them to push the envelope. Usually they go bigger and higher than they even thought possible or planned for.
  9. They recalibrate and come again. Not all entrepreneurs get it right the first, second or third time but that doesn’t stop them. Now they know more ways that don’t work. If they need financial help then ask find someone who can help. Failing gives them information about themselves and what they need to change in order to succeed.
